There’s plenty of supernatural folklore about the moon and its effects on people and living things. There’s also good evidence that the moon affects paranormal phenomena, too.

In folklore, a full moon is a time of increased activity of all sorts. The full moon has been
blamed for causing insanity and crazy behavior. It is a time of good luck and bounty, of bursting sap and copious blood. Because vital forces and fluids are at their peak, things should not be cut and surgeries should not be undertaken, according to lore.

The full moon also has a real biological tide effect on fluids in the body, which could affect mental states – and, by extrapolation, a person’s sensitivity to psychic phenomena. Depending on the individual, sensitivity might increase or decrease. Many paranormal investigators feel that the full moon is not good for investigations, however, and say that waning and new moon phases seem to be better. From a folklore perspective, it makes sense. The riot of natural activity stirred up by the moon could interfere with the ability of subtler phenomena to stand out.

The full moon actually produces geophysical effects that may indeed dampen paranormal activity. The earth expands 1/16 of an inch during the full moon’s gravitational pull. The expansion is caused by the movement of magma chambers below the earth’s surface. These movements affect the earth’s magnetic fields. Many paranormal hot spots are in areas of negative magnetic anomalies. Thus, an increase in magnetic fields is likely to have an adverse impact on paranormal activity.

Actually, neither the precise full moon nor new moon may be the best times for the paranormal. Take note of these findings in ufology related to lunar phases, compiled by my research colleague Philip J. Imbrogno, a noted ufologist, science educator and author of several books, among the, The Interdimensional Universe, Files From the Edge and (as co-author ) Night Seige. Phil has compared lunar phases in 3,432 reports of UFO sightings in the Hudson Valley, New York area between 1983 and 1997, where a major UFO wave occurred. He found that the peak of UFO activity occurred 2.5 days after the full moon, with a second and lesser peak 2.5 days after the new moon.

Many paranormal hot spots feature a wide range of activity – not just hauntings, but UFO sightings and mysterious creatures as well. A study of the dates and times of non-UFO paranormal activity probably would show the same lunar phase pattern, Phil says.

Phil and I are presently researching portals, areas of “hot” paranormal activity, and we are compiling lunar phase and other data to help establish patterns in these areas.

If someone you love struggles with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, or ADD/ADHD, you will likely be interested in any new breakthroughs in the treatment of these disorders. For years, parents, schools, and doctors have been struggling to find a solution for attention deficit disorder, especially as more children each year are being diagnosed with one of these disorders. In any given classroom of thirty or so students these days, there will typically be at least two or three children with ADD/ADHD. Parents may feel they have very few options for treating their children who have received this diagnosis.

The traditional treatment for the disorder has been medication, Ritalin being one of the first. Since then, drug companies have produced a variety of treatments for ADD/ADHD. These medications may not treat the disorder itself, however, but merely work to curb the symptoms. They also may have many drawbacks, including short-term side effects such as fatigue, appetite loss, and personality alterations, as well as the possibility of long-term effects, some of which may have yet to be discovered.

While there are a few natural treatments available, including dietary and behavioral therapy, many of these treatments have produced limited results, because even these treatments do not truly address the problem at its core. Children and adults with ADD/ADHD have been left with little hope of any permanent resolution, and have had to face the prospect of living with the disorder for the rest of their lives. But that may not be the case for long.

A new therapy called neurofeedback, also known as ‘biofeedback for the brain’, has already dramatically changed the lives of many ADD/ADHD sufferers. In one recent study neurofeedback therapy was able to successfully eliminate all attention deficit symptoms in 80% of the participants. In addition, most of the children involved in the study experienced an increase in IQ.

Some neurofeedback therapists may recommend that ADD/ADHD patients continue with their medications for a time after they begin neurofeedback therapy but when the therapy is complete “usually after about 40 to 60 sessions”some patients should be able to live symptom-free without medication.

Neurofeedback works by helping the brain to learn the correct brain wave patterns to use for different situations. With attention deficit disorder, scientists have not pinpointed the exact cause of the disorder, but they do know that it involves a malfunction within the brain that causes the patient’s actions and thoughts to be erratic, disorganized, and hyperactive. Neurofeedback helps the brain regain normal functioning by retraining it to work within optimal wavelengths.

During the neurofeedback therapy sessions, which most patients experience as very comfortable, and even enjoyable, electrical signals from the brain will be transmitted through an EEG machine that reads brain waves. The patient will then use their brain waves to perform simple activities such as making a spaceship on a computer screen “fly.” The brain enjoys this activity, and will continue using these particular patterns until they become more permanently ingrained.

More and more therapists are seeing the benefits of neurofeedback for their patients, many of whom have been in dire need of such an alternative.

Despite the scientific advancements in the research and development of binaural beats throughout the last few centuries, their usage has been a fixture of many ancient cultures, including the Native-American shamans, Tibetan monks, master-yogis and Hindu healers. These ancient tribes found that by producing consistent, rhythmic beats, they could induce altered states of consciousness, resulting in both healing and spiritual benefits.

Scientist Melinda Maxfield conducted research into several of these cultures, and found that the drums used in their rituals are beat at a rate of 4.5 beats-per-second, producing trance like states to listeners. This is a result of the brain mirroring the 4.5 bps into an identical 4.5 bps brainwave frequency, which is a low Theta state.

In 1839, the binaural beat phenomenon was propelled into the realm of science with the research of Heinrich Willhelm Cove. Heinrich’s work set the foundation for Gerald Oster, who 134 years later in 1973, reformulated the scattered binaural beat research by providing new insights into the subject with a paper entitled, ‘Auditory Beats in the Brain’.

Oster found binaural beats to be an effective tool for cognitive neurological research. For example, he discovered the ‘cocktail party effect’; the ability of animals to pick out certain sounds in a vast sea of noise. He also noted their effectiveness in the diagnosis and treatment of neurological conditions and auditory impairments.

A few years later, Robert Monroe, with the assistance of Thomas Campbell and Dennis Mennerich, researched the effects of binaural beats on consciousness. Like the ancient cultures of Tibet and India they found that these rhythmic pulses are a great tool for reaching altered states of consciousness. Their research was focused on the reproduction of a subjective impression of a 4Hz oscillation that they associated with out-of-body-experiences. They subsequently created the binaural beat self development industry, and formed The Monroe Institute, a binaural beat research and education organization.

My name is Franco Costabile, the owner of http://www.binauralbrainwave.net. My aim is to bring the amazing phenomenon of Binaural, Isochronic and Monaural beats to a wider audience, with an emphasis on their potentialities as effective tools for various areas of self improvement.
